Having this arrangement really enables you to focus on the plan itself without worry that he's making the recommendations based on his own retirement goals rather than yours.

I've had quite a bit of experience with financial planners in the past. Over the years I've been with at least 4 of them and interviewed many more. The one constant in the financial planning world is disconcerting feeling that everyone is just after your money. You're constantly being upsold on securities, insurance, and other vehicles that you either don't need or are simply designed to put money in the pockets of your planner. The industry is rife with conflicts of interested and this makes it really hard to find a plan that you can feel is truly in your best interest.
