The Mexican cultural arts center made a really nice venue for the Austin food and wine festival. Plenty of vineyards showed up to share their wine. Not to be outdone the liquor reps provided mixed samples on ice to help every one stay cool.
I guess if there was anything to improve is the attempt to search for that 'magic' back with a more dynamic social reach. Let's try to take the people away from their screens and back outside with art, culture, and hospitality. The way Texans ought to be.
Great place to learn about Mexican American Culture.
I was searching for that 'magic' that you felt when you were a kid when you took field trips to museums. I suppose it was more of a social event than anything.
Occasionally has great events that help the neighborhood connect to and enjoy awesome Mexican culture, but more often, it's rented out for private events and parties for profit. If you're from out of town and are expecting this to be a museum or place to take the kids, know it is more of a SXSW event space than a place to learn / explore / exchange culture. Also, as neighborhood resident, we have regular issues with the venue's management not compromising / sharing the park area with the neighborhood's organic uses. There are several examples of them calling the police on neighbors for playing off-leash fetch with their dogs (about 100 yards away), while none of us do them same when their event trash blows "over their line in the grass," or, when their music regularly violates the noise ordinance. It reminds me the childish stuff I might expect in a Florida retirement community, but not here in a happy, live-and-let-live Austin. I guess times are changing, or, maybe the venue's management does so little in terms of regular cultural engagement that complaining about petty issues is how they pass the time and justify their paychecks. I've got a pretty good BS detector, and I'm betting it's the second. :)
Many thanks for all efforts and the incredible hospitality!
The architecture is impressive, the connection to Austin's Hispanic-American roots is very evident, and the gallery was nice.
