When I get there a stone faced butcher tells me they don't have my turkey. "Did you get an email because if you didn't get an email you didn't reserve the turkey." Yeah, I got an email, confirmed over the phone, and I also paid a deposit, but I'm on inbox zero and didn't anticipate having to litigate the issue at the butcher store. I just thought I'd pick up my turkey. No dice. And no adjustment of price based on the money I paid for a turkey I never got. Did I need to bring a bank statement to prove I paid for the turkey in advance?
I fully get that this is a "first world problem," but it's also simply not OK to take money in advance for turkeys and then not deliver them, especially when it was so obvious they didn't care, and especially on a holiday. Selling a mutilated turkey on top of that felt like they were trying to give me the middle finger. I will never go back to Salt and Time, it's not hard to buy pasture meats in Austin from a place that isn't hostile to its customers.
I have been thinking & raving about this place since I came a month ago. I am not a beef person, I might've had steak 3 or 4 times in my life but my god this hanger steak I had here. It was a food-piphany, a meat-gasm, an out of body experience. It was too good. My companions pork chops were so flavorful & juicy & tender. Jeez. Coming back into town & stopping by here again, I hope it's just as amazing.
Knowing that these farms are ethical and the cows are treated humanely makes a big difference. I'd definitely come back.
It's 3:30 PM the day before Thanksgiving. I'm racing around doing errands in preparation for my family coming in town in a few hours. Just braved insanity at the grocery store and last on the list is to pick up a turkey I reserved (and paid for) over a month ago at Salt and Time.
I came here for the butcher shop and it did not disappoint. We got 2 half pound beef patties for $8 and they were delicious. We even got to see which farm our beef patties came from.
The only turkey they had for me was a 12 pounder, too small for my family, and the total price tag ended up being $114 plus the deposit from the other turkey I reserved. So, all in I am at $140 for a 12 pound turkey, and the hipster girls I am buying from are full on scowling at me as I checkout. When it came time to prepare the turkey, we get it out of the bag and see that it has a wing cut off!! So, for $140, I don't even get a full turkey, I get one that has been used for parts.
Amazing experience at Salt and Time. The atmosphere was relaxed and the waitress was welcoming and knowledgeable. Above all else the food was sensational; beautifully cooked steak and the fries were outstanding! It's Austin, so we'd had our fair share of good meat but the bavette here was wonderful. I would genuinely recommend to anyone who loves meat
Hands down the best meat market I've ever been to. Staff is friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable, incredible selection, picked up some sausage and this beautiful cowboy ribeye. Definitely on the pricey side and totally worth it, but don't worry they have something for all budgets
