my son loves clearview. he has grown so much as a person.
The democratic structure gives kids the freedom to learn in their own way. This is a truly radical school where the main rule is that everyone has the right to exist peaceably. The school is kid led and truly empowering providing a space for kids to learn self respect and responsibility without standardization and testing.
This school is a great alternative for kids that are struggling under the rigid public school system. It's a very small school with kids of many ages learning together and a good ratio of students to adults (currently 5:1).
I am one of the kids that goes here and I love it so fun and I love it better then any other school I have gone to I have been going there for 5 years now. Still love it to this day!
It's definitely not for everybody though, the lack of formal instruction can be difficult to get used to and it depends on each student having the willpower and interest to guide their own education.
There is nothing like the ability to be able to do a comparative analysis in order to understand why a school like Clearview will be a great choice for us. The number one reason is acceptance which means they teach children to overcome a number of communication obstacles and social stigmas generated society. The stigmas are sometimes hard to see because as it was once explained to me that culture like the air we breath. We grow up with it being a natural part of our environment that is until we are made aware. Public school is certainly not for everyone because it is very rigid and gauges intelligence based on tools that do not necessarily reflect comprehension. Real life experience is by far a better teacher which is something that is hard to gain when you are sitting behind a desk or shown a video because it doesn't provide a full picture but a narrow window in which children must understand and define their experience. When you have a child that is a deep thinker and wants to expand beyond what is presented to them because they see conflict or need more information to make sense of the scenario public education becomes a place that does not have time or talent to deliver. Those that care enough or have the gift to be able to help nurture and feed a child's mind are in short supply because the wage paid to teachers and the fact that unions exist to protect those unworthy of this task stifle the natural process of attrition. Those that teach because they love to educate and love people do it at a financial sacrifice because it can be an exhausting and demanding career. Those teachers are gifts to our society and will nurture the minds of children in ways we desperately need. Children are more capable than what we give them credit for and will develop a natural curiosity on their own if they are provided with the correct environment. It is definitely a leap of faith to embrace this philosophy because we are programmed against it. However, if we look back in history we will see young and resourceful people who today we would consider incapable children with irresponsible parents. Our children are their own people, with their own likes, dislikes and needs. Providing an environment of choice allows them to, and this is extremely important to overall happiness of an individual, discover who they are and what they find important. We as a family are fortunate enough to let Nick have this opportunity and lucky that such a learning facility exist to help him not only aide him in his learning but help him discover who he is.
